The Lost Concerts and the PNP Bandwagon
Adapted from original reporting by Marco Virgona.
One of the more controversial periods in the Wailers¹ career came during the election period of late 1971 leading up to a change in government, from the right-wing Jamaica Labor Party to the Socialist regime of Michael Manley, elected on Feb. 29, 1972. The fine Italian Web site, marleymyguide.com recently reported hitherto-unknown details of the PNP Bandwagon, an all-star review that toured throughout Jamaica for several months in support of Manley¹s candidacy. |
Bob Marley in Gun Court
By Chris Salewicz
Chris Salewicz is the highly acclaimed author of Songs of Freedom, one of the very best biographies of Bob Marley. Here, in an excerpt from Rude Boy, his out-of-print but riveting history of Jamaica, he tells of an impromptu 1978 visit to the notorious Gun Court prison, accompanying Bob as he seeks mercy for an imprisoned activist.

I Remember One Love...I Think
By Mark Roland
Artwork by Robert Steinhilber
Like most folks, I¹ve made some dubious choices over the years which can occasionally induce pangs of regret. Blowing off Woodstock for a Mets game...oversleeping my interview with Muhammad Ali..staying with my first girlfriend six years too long...things like that. But even amidst those halcyon days of young and dumb, I did manage to do one thing very, very right: In April 1978, I traveled to Jamaica and had the musical time of my life. And no, I¹m not talking about the legendary One Love Peace Concert, though I was there for that, too. I¹m talking about the night before. |
